Dixon Summer Archaeology Lecture Series
July 13, 2016
"A History of the Awat’ovi Massacre"
7 pm at the Embudo Valley Library, Dixon
Dr. James Brooks, Professor of History and Anthropology at UC-Santa Barbara, will discuss the brutal massacre, in the year 1700, of the men, women and children of the Hopi village of Awat’ovi, not by enemy tribes or colonial forces, but by fellow Hopis from nearby villages. Motivations behind this wholesale slaughter remain mysterious, and have been thoroughly researched and explored in the book by Dr. Brooks, entitled “Mesa of Sorrows: A History of the Awat’ovi Massacre”.
How about making an evening of it: the Dixon co-op Deli is open until 7 pm with hot and cold sandwiches and homemade pizza, for those who want to enjoy a full evening out.
